This article documents the Pomona College guest use of the POM-GUEST wireless network.
Pomona College faculty, staff and students should only use the POMONA wireless network.
Faculty, staff and students from the other Claremont colleges should only use the CINE wireless network [and soon CLAREMONT].
Pomona College hosts many visitors on any given day:
- Potential students with their families
- Guest speakers
- Alumni back to see how things have changed.
- Vendors on campus for meetings
Many visitors have enquired about a guest level of wireless access. Pomona College offers a solution that is now available for ITS managed wireless services.
How To Get Guest Access
Visitors who bring a notebook or other device with wireless may use the POM-GUEST wireless network. Connect to the POM-GUEST as you would any wireless network. Then, open a web browser. Your web browser should be automatically redirected to a registration page where one can enter his/her email address. Once registered, visitors will be able to use basic internet services, web browsing, and all of the normal internet functions, similar to using wireless at hotels or coffee shops.
This does not give guests access to any of the Pomona College network resources; Pomona College email servers, file servers, etc.
CAUTION:
Similar to hotels or coffee shops, guests don't have an SMTP server available to send email via the POM-GUEST wireless network. Thus, you will not be able to send email from your email client [software like Outlook, Entourage, Apple Mail, etc]. Most ISPs [internet service providers like Verizon, Comcast, DSL Extreme, etc.] do not allow their customers to use their SMTP server while the customer is using a different internet service, like POM-GUEST. You will not be able to send email from your email client.
The easiest way around this issue is to use the Webmail interface provided by the guest's own ISP.
