| | Troubleshooting Wireless connection problems on campus |
| Details: | This knowledgebase article was created to help ITS help you if you are having trouble with wireless at Pomona College. Please note this article is for Pomona College students, faculty and staff who should only be using the POMONA wireless network while on campus.
CAUTION:
- Only members of the other Claremont Colleges should use the CINE wireless network.
- Only guests of the college should use the POM-GUEST wireless network.
Troubleshooting
Below is a list of troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve problems you are having with your wireless connection:
1.
Make sure your wireless device [computer, smart phone, game console, etc.] is connected to the POMONA wireless network [not CINE, POM-GUEST, or other].
2.
Make sure your wireless device's wireless card is really registered with the POMONA wireless network. When registering to the POMONA wireless network, make sure your wireless device is not connected to a wired [ethernet] connection. To begin the registration, connect to the POMONA wireless network and open your preferred web browser. You should be automatically re-directed to the registration page.
3.
Make sure the wireless device has all of its updates, especially latest software driver or firmware for the installed wireless card.
Some of the reported problems appear to be related to problems with the wireless card in an individual's wireless device. ITS conducted tests and older wireless cards in some cases either had difficulty properly connecting to the wireless network or were dropped after being connected. The older your wireless device, the higher the probability is that it may have issues with the wireless card as the card has amplifiers which do wear out over time especially with heavy use. The only solution is to replace the wireless card. This should not be an issue with the majority of College-owned notebooks.
Issues with Apples notebooks
ITS has been monitoring numerous online discussion threads regarding Mac issues. Apple did release an update on March 3, 2009 that specifically addresses the wireless problems in their latest OS (operating system), but we are not sure if Apple plans to release anything for older OS versions.
Issues with Windows Notebooks using Intel Wireless Cards
ITS and our wireless service provider have confirmed that there may issues with connectivity for some Intel Wireless network card. Intel has now addressed these issues in the latest version of drivers. It is important that users are directed to get the latest drivers from the Intel website and not from Microsoft Updates or the Laptop manufacturer which are often behind.
Fortunately, Intel drivers are now unified in that one installer that will cover most Wireless network cards, with the possible exception of very old ones. Please select the software based on your computer's operating system:
