| | Trouble with the Pomona College VPN |
| Details: | The following are steps you can take [items you should note] when you are having trouble with the Pomona College VPN:
- Check the status of the Pomona College VPN server [Click Here]. If Pomona College VPN server shows up in Red, there is a problem with the services.
- If you are getting a password errror, check you VPN setup [ Windows or Macintosh] to make sure an old password had not been stored in place of your current password.
- The Pomona College VPN connection will not work on an on-campus wired [ethernet] connection.
- Make sure you have a working connection to the Internet. To test this, try opening a web page.
- You will have to reestablish the VPN connection every time you restart your computer or bring it out of sleep.
- If you leave your computer alone for a while and it goes into standby or sleep mode, you may lose your connection.
- Try power cycling [turn off and then on] your home network equipment [DSL modem, wireless router, cable modem, etc]. A good power cycle cures many ills.
- Make sure your router supports VPN/IPSec. Refer to your instruction manual or the router manufacturer's website for more information.
- Temporarily disable any firewall software. If you can connect to VPN with the firewall software disabled, you will need to configure your firewall to permit the connection. Refer to your firewall's documentation for opening ports in your firewall.
- Your home internet service provider (ISP) may have disabled VPN support for security issues. Try giving them a call to see if it's a problem on their end of the line. They also may have other special instructions or workarounds.
- Some public wireless access points [Hotel/Airport/Cafe] are firewalled to deny VPN connections, or to limit the number of users who may be connected to VPN at any given time. If you're having trouble connecting and you've verified that your settings are correct, this may be the case. Unfortunately, there is probably nothing you can do, since this is controlled at the location of the access point. Just the same, you should contact the provider of the internet connection [Hotel/Airport/Cafe] for verification and solution.
- If you run instant messaging software, you might notice that it thinks you're signed on in two places when you start VPN. This is because connecting to VPN gives you a second IP address. It's normal, and you shouldn't worry about it! You have signed on twice from the same computer.
