Pomona College VPN on a Macintosh computer

These instructions will show you how to setup a Pomona College VPN connecton on an Apple computer. To find out what version of OS X [OS 10] you are using and what setup instructions to use, do this:

1. Go to the Apple menu [upper left corner] and select on 'About This Mac' from the drop-down menu.
2. In the window that comes up, take note of the 'Version' number under 'Mac OS X'
3. Use the instuctions based on your 'Version' of OS X
- OS 10.5.x [Leopard]
- OS 10.3.x and 10.4x [Panther and Tiger]

NOTES:
- The Pomona College VPN connection will not work if you are on a Pomona College wired [ethernet] connection.
- If you have trouble with the VPN connection on your internet connection, click to try troubleshooting.
- Using the VPN connection can create a bottleneck on your connection to the internet, meaning your internet connection may be slowed.  Thus, when you no longer need to access Pomona College network resourse, disconnect the VPN connection


Create A New Pomona College VPN Connection in OS 10.5 [Leopard]

1. Go to the Apple menu [upper left corner] and select 'System Preferences' from the drop-down menu.

2. In the System Preferences window, click on the 'Network' icon.  The Network control panel will appear

3. Click the + icon in the bottom corner of the left-hand menu to add a connection.

4. For the 'Select the interface and enter a name for the new services' settings::
        Interface:, choose VPN from the pop-down menu
        VPN Type:, choose PPTP from the pop-down menu
        Service Name:, type in Pomona College VPN
    Then, click Create

5. Click on the 'Pomona College VPN' listing to the right.  Then, iIn the right-hand menu, click on the drop-down menu next to Configuration, which currently says Default, and select Add Configuration

6. Name the configuration 'Pomona College VPN' and click on the 'Create' button.

7. Set the following information [see image below for detail]:
         Configuration:, type in Pomona College VPN (or a name of your choosing)
         Server Address:, type in vpn.pomona.edu
         Account Name:, type in your Pomona username (i.e. ces04747, ces02008, ces01925, etc)
         Encryption:, leave at Automatic (128 bit or 40 bit)
    Check the box next to 'Show VPN status in menu bar'.

7. For your security, click on 'Authentication Settings...' and make sure the 'Password' field for 'User Authentication:' is blank.   Then, click OK.

NOTE: Leaving the User Authentication field blank will require you to enter your password each time you log into the Pomona College VPN.  ITS does not recommend storing your password or sharing it among other users of the computer.  If your laptop/computer is lost or stolen, for example, your stored password to access your data without your knowledge.

8. Click the 'Apply' button and close the Network window.  Your Pomona College VPN connection is setup and ready to connect.  CLICK HERE to go to the section at the bottom for instuctions on how to activate the connection.



Create A New Pomona College VPN Connection in OS 10.3 and 10.4 [Panther and Tiger]

1. Click on the Finder icon on the left side of the Dock to open a Finder window.  Then, click on the Go menu [top of your computer's dispay] and select 'Applications'.

2. In the Applications window, double click on the Internet Connect icon.  Once Internet Connect is open, select File and click New VPN Connection...

3. A window will appear titled 'Your computer needs to be set up to make VPN connections'.  Click on the button next to 'PPTP' and click the 'Continue' button.

4. A new icon will appear at the top of the Internet Connect window named VPN (PPTP).

5. You will now need to configure the VPN.  Click on the button next to 'Configuration' and select 'Edit Configurations...'

6. Enter the following:
     a) Description: Pomona College VPN
     b) Server Address: vpn.pomona.edu Under Account
     c) Name: your Pomona username (i.e. ces04747, ces02008, ces01925, etc)
     d) User Authentication: (type in your email password) 
     Then, click the 'OK' button

7. Check the 'Show VPN Status in menu bar' option for easy access.

8. For your security, make sure the 'Password' is blank.  Close the VPN (PPTP) window.

Connecting To The Pomona College VPN
The Pomona College VPN does not establish Internet access. To use the Pomona College VPN, you must have an existing internet connection.  Once you have established an Internet connection, you can then initiate a connection to Pomona's VPN.

If you have configured VPN according to the instructions above, you should see the VPN Menu icon [pictured to the right] in the top right corner of your screen.  Click on the VPN Menu icon and choose 'Connect' or 'Connect Pomona College VPN'.

A pop-up window will appear, asking you to enter your password. Enter your password [same that you use for email, Sakai, my.pomona.edu, etc.].

Once connected, the VPN menu icon will show the status of your connection and your connection time will be displayed as well.

You can access Pomona Network resources ( such as your network home folder, Classes volume, etc. ) as you would if you were on campus.

Disconnecting From The Pomona College VPN

Before you disconnect from VPN, make sure that you have unmounted any Pomona network volumes. You can also disconnect manually by pulling down the VPN menu and choosing Disconnect.

Click on the VPN Menu icon and choose 'Disconnect' or 'Disconnect Pomona College VPN'.  Shutting down or restarting your computer will disconnect you from VPN.
